This course, which will be both didactic and experiential, will focus on understanding the foundation of mind/body medicine, the role of stress in illness, recent research advances, and techniques and applications of mind/body medicine. Learners will come to understand how the causes, development and outcomes of an illness are determined by the interaction of biochemistry and physiology with psychological, social and cultural factors. Recent data establishing that the relaxation response beneficially alters genomic changes will be covered.

This course is designed so that participants will be able to:
  • Describe the history, components and the economic benefits of mind/body medicine;
  • Employ stress physiology and mind/body interactions in health and illness;
  • Describe recent research in mind/body medicine;
  • Utilize several mind/body techniques and understand their applications.

HERBERT BENSON, MD Mind/Body Medical Institute, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and the Director Emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. The recipient of numerous national and international awards, Dr. Benson has been a pioneer in mind/body studies. His work led to the definition of the relaxation response and how it counteracts the harmful effects of stress and serves as a bridge between mind and body as well as between medicine and spirituality. Dr. Benson is the author or co-author of more than 180 publications and eleven books including: The Relaxation Response; The Mind/ Body Effect; The Wellness Book; Timeless Healing; The Breakout Principle: Activate the Natural Trigger that Maximizes Creativity, Athletic Performance, Productivity and Personal Well-Being; Mind Over Menopause; Mind Your Heart; and The Harvard Medical School Guide to Lowering Your Blood Pressure.

ANN WEBSTER, PhD is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Mind/Body Programs for Cancer and HIV/AIDS. She is a health psychologist, researcher and clinical/corporate trainer for the Benson-Henry Institute. Dr. Webster has received several awards, most notably from the AIDS Action Committee and the Northern Lights Alternatives, for her work with HIV and AIDS patients. Dr. Webster sits on the boards of The Medical Foundation, the Community Research Initiative and the Institute for Body, Mind and Spirituality at Lesley University.
