This course is designed for all physicians, health care professionals and health care lawyers. Working with the legal system can be fascinating and rewarding for the clinician, but there are many potential pitfalls. It is increasingly common for the practicing physician to appear in the courtroom in one capacity or another. This often engenders clinician anxiety and uncertainty, especially in the role of defendant. This course will familiarize the audience with the process.
A unique feature of this course is the mock trial demonstration, during which the faculty will illustrate the critical components of survival in the courtroom. The format incorporates time for lecture, panel discussions and Q & A with the faculty. This course will be offered separately or in conjunction with Liability Prevention For Physicians and Health Care
Professionals: Strategies and Update, 2013
- Evaluate the legal process, types of witnesses, deposition strategies, areas of possible difficulties, examination and cross-examination, and common errors that are made by clinicians;
- Collaborate effectively with attorneys, treating physicians, expert witness, and or defendants;
- Develop strategies to reduce the likelihood of appearing in court and how to prevail if sued;
- Apply new skills to master courtroom challenges, and be more prepared to work with both plaintiff and defense attorneys; Consider the benefit of having your own personal attorney in a malpractice case.

Liability Prevention for Physicians and Health Care Professionals meets the criteria for 7 credit hours, Physicians and Health Care Professionals in Court: A Survival Guide meets the criteria 6.5 credit hours and both programs meet the criteria for 13.50 credit hours. Risk management credit(s) were determined based on criteria outlined by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine. Please check with your individual state licensing board requirements before claiming risk management credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
