Conference has been rescheduled to Friday, April 28, 2017.

This one day symposium brings together mental health experts to provide state of the art reviews on medical and substance use comorbidity in serious mental illness.  Speakers include current members and alumni of the Massachusetts Mental Health Center community, the broader Boston community and the Harvard Medical School. The symposium will be of interest to psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses and other mental health professionals as well as students from these health professions.

This course is designed so that participants will be able to:

 

Discuss approach to differential diagnosis and assessment of seriously mentally ill patients presenting with concomitant medical illness and/or substance abuse.

Discuss the nature, prevalence and consequences of psychiatric and substance use comorbidity in serious mental illness.

Discuss current thinking on approaches to integrate care for comorbid medical and substance abuse problems in serious mental illness.

Discuss the causes, prevention and management of metabolic syndrome and weight gain in patients with serious mental illness.

Discuss the current state of understanding of the evidence base for exercise and lifestyle interventions in the management of serious mental illnesses.

Discuss the current approaches to manage nicotine addiction in patients with serious mental illness.
